Getting Educated: Social Media for Small Business

by Brenda Lytel on August 19, 2012

In the business world today, the internet is an invaluable tool for improving marketing capabilities but one must know how to correctly use its resources to be successful. The biggest and most beneficial area concerning internet advertising right now is the use of social media sites. Free of cost, these social networking domains allow users to meet and interact with millions of potential customers in ways that are impossible to achieve with traditional media options.

Almost everyone nowadays has a Facebook or Twitter account and is knowledgeable in how to navigate and use those sites for personal expression; however, many of us fall short when it comes to the knowledge of effective organizational use. Yes, it's easy enough to hop on any popular social media webpage and create an account for a business, but what do you do to be successful in marketing efforts beyond that point? This is where knowledge in social media management comes in.

In order for any business to utilize these types of marketing tools to their full potential, they must possess staff who are knowledgeable in a wide variety of social media interfaces. The problem is, most small businesses can't afford to hire on people with the skills they need; therefore, the most cost effective way for smaller organizations to jump into social media marketing full force, is to train existing employees in the field.

There are numerous social media certifications available through online venues that can be very effective but it's always best to do a bit of investigation into the quality of the program before signing up. Despite that low prices may be eye-catching, they can also be indicative of a low-quality program. Because many of these courses are relatively new, there are few reliable rankings available to fuel your investigation; however, with a little effort, you confirm the qualifications of the individual or organization offering such courses. Here are a few examples we found in regard to reputable online resources for social media education to help get you started.

The University of San Francisco Online – Offered by an online division of one of the United State's top 50 universities, this advanced social media course provides up-to-date   and accurate information for business professionals looking to expand their technological knowledge. You'll learn about social media basics, how to respond to and monitor postings, how to create content, social media metrics, and much more. By obtaining education on the social media topics you actually need, you'll have better chances at achieving your goals and creating a strong network that will bring notoriety, reputation, and most of all, profit.

Twitter for Business: The Basics

by Brenda Lytel on August 10, 2012

The internet is fundamental to small business; and today, there is simply no other way to promote an organization that is as effective and economical as utilizing online advertising resources. Literally thousands of sites allow businesses to place ads online, but when it comes to reaching out to your customers in a more personal way, social media sites are key. Facebook and Linkedin are great assets for such purposes, but Twitter can also be a straightforward tool that can give your business a place in people's everyday lives.

What is Twitter?

Despite that this social networking site is similar to others of its kind, Twitter is more focused on interacting with people than sites that incorporate games, photo albums, and music. A free service, twitter is a place where one can post comments of up to 140 characters that will be viewable to the tweeter's followers. Many personal users interact with this utility to announce life happenings, share thoughts, or pass on news to others; however, when it comes to commercial entities, sharing industry focused information is the main idea.

Benefits of Business Tweets

Because Twitter is all about having your comments followed and following others, this social media site is perfect for product or service promotion. Traditional newspaper or television ads may draw attention but they have two downfalls, limited viewership and high cost. No business wants to spend top dollar if they don't have to, especially on something with limited results; therefore, Twitter has become a big draw for entrepreneurs everywhere. With an unlimited ability to post at no cost and the capability to reach over 100,000 users, Twitter advertising is both easy and proficient.

How to Be Sure Your Postings Get Noticed

Although the amount of followers you acquire is representative of the number of people your posts will reach, keeping your readers interested is essential to retaining them. One important factor to remember is simplicity. By composing posts that are variable and simple, yet focused, you quickly get your point across and save your customers unnecessary guesswork.

Of course relevancy, variety, and simplicity is only part of getting noticed. Maintaining followers also requires that your posts be something people want to read. Create intrigue by noting sales, events, new products, purchase options, or other points that will make readers stop and take notice.

Frequency is another important area. Your followers are looking to stay up to date with information; therefore, posting on a regular basis will not only keep your organization fresh in their mind but also will help them feel like they don't want to miss what you have to say next. Another imperative use involves seeking feedback and interacting with customers.

Posting notices that don't intrigue readers to respond will not initiate the exchange of thoughts that can bring about much needed feedback. Always be sure to not only ask questions of your readers, but also to answer their questions and thank them for their interest. Sharing tips, providing advice, and asking what your customers want is a great way to do this.

10 Essential Tips for Becoming a Successful Business Tweeter

1. Set goals and have one person work with the Twitter interface to accomplish those goals. Having more than one person post can result in deviation from objectives.

2. Be sure the twitter handle you choose is clearly representative of your business in a way that viewers make an instant connection.

3. Take the time to complete Twellow and We Follow profiles. This will help potential followers find your business easier.

4. Don't be tempted to follow tweets that aren't business related. Following celebrities, bands, or other personal interests just creates more posts to sift through and could cause you to miss something important. Stick to following only business relevant posts.

5. Create special offers that can be redeemed only by twitter users. Doing so will show your appreciation and keep people following intently.

6. Twitter Search is a great way to track any mention of your competitors. If you see that one of your followers is interested in similar services, be sure to touch base with them and inform them of what you offer.

7. Use Twitter to communicate your company's values and to direct customers to your website. By posting links to blogs or homepages you can increase site visitors and give direct access to more extensive information.

8. Take advantage of the ability to perform free market research and investigate popular keywords used by potential customers. Through reading other's posts in regard to your field, you can locate the competition and see what terms are most used by those interested in your services.

9. Ask followers to post testimonials and remember that a low number of engaged viewers is much more effective than hundreds who are disinterested.

10. Don't forget to participate in Follow Friday. This will help you connect with new people and give you a chance to gain recommendations.

Twitter can truly be an invaluable tool when it comes to staying in frequent contact with customers, growing your online network, and establishing a relationship with the public. No matter if you choose to set goals in regard to gaining new clients or goals toward interacting with current consumers, you are sure to find that posting on Twitter is a great way to make those goals a reality.
